Definition
The Lead Therapist provides clinical leadership and day-to-day guidance to assigned therapy interns while supporting the overall quality and consistency of clinical services. This role serves as the primary onsite supervisor for a small group of interns and is responsible for mentoring, coaching, and supporting their professional development in alignment with agency standards and program goals.
The Lead Therapist oversees the intern experience by providing structured supervision, monitoring workload and client assignments, and ensuring adherence to clinical and documentation requirements. Responsibilities include conducting regular one-on-one check-ins, assisting with goal setting, completing performance evaluations, and reviewing and approving timecards. The Lead Therapist works closely with program leadership to support intern training, provide feedback on performance, and identify areas for growth or additional support.
This role plays an important part in maintaining a supportive learning environment while helping ensure interns deliver high-quality, ethical, and client-centered services.
Supervision:
The Lead Therapist provides supervision to Student Therapists and Therapist Interns. May provide structured peer consultation and mentorship to licensed therapists.
Duties:
Direct Clinical Services
- Maintain a reduced caseload of no less than 10 active clients. Caseload expectations may increase based on program needs, including periods when supervision responsibilities are reduced (e.g., when no student interns are assigned).
- Provide individual and family therapy using accepted clinical methods and evidence-based practices.
- Conduct crisis assessments at pre-determined school locations that include follow up care recommendations.
- Conduct risk assessments, safety planning, and follow-up recommendations as needed
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation including assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
- Provide referrals and enhanced referrals as appropriate.
- Collaborate with Case Managers and other staff to provide wraparound services.
Clinical Supervision & Consultation
- Provide structured clinical supervision to student therapists, including creating Learning Agreements and completing their end of semester student performance evaluation.
- Facilitate case consultation discussions to support ethical decision-making, clinical skill development, and effective service delivery.
- Serve as a first-line clinical consult for complex cases, providing guidance and recommendations prior to escalation to the Clinical Manager when appropriate.
- Support onboarding and clinical orientation of new therapists and interns, including review of agency clinical practices, documentation expectations, and service delivery standards.
- Provide day-to-day guidance and mentorship to assigned interns to support professional growth, clinical competency, and adherence to agency policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular supervision meetings and individual check-ins to review case progress, address challenges, and support clinical skill development.
- Participate in the development of intern learning plans and professional goals and monitor progress throughout the internship placement.
- Complete intern performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback regarding clinical practice, professionalism, and documentation standards.
- Review and approve intern timecards to ensure accurate reporting of hours worked and compliance with agency payroll procedures.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Manager regarding intern performance, development needs, and any concerns related to clinical practice or professional conduct.
Clinical Quality Assurance
In partnership with the Clinical Manager:
- Conduct routine chart audits using established agency tools.
- Identify documentation trends and areas for improvement.
- Provide coaching and feedback to therapists to strengthen documentation quality and clinical practice.
- Support adherence to ethical codes (AAMFT, ACA, NASW) and applicable federal and state laws.
- Elevate compliance concerns to the Clinical Manager as appropriate.
Team Leadership & Communication
- Model professional communication, collaboration, and agency values.
- Support implementation of agency policies and clinical procedures.
- Support consistent communication of expectations related to documentation, risk assessment, and service standards.
- Contribute to maintaining a positive and strengths-based team culture.
Program Support & Problem Solving
- Identify recurring clinical workflow challenges and recommend improvements to the Clinical Manager.
- Assist in developing or refining clinical tools, templates, or training materials.
- Provide input on programmatic needs related to service delivery and clinical resources.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Manager to ensure alignment with agency mission, values, and strategic objectives.
Minimum Qualifications Needed:
Ability to:
- Provide rapid and effective crisis intervention services while supporting interns and therapists in applying appropriate crisis response protocols.
- Express ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, including providing constructive feedback and guidance to interns and clinical staff.
- Work effectively with families from diverse backgrounds and model culturally responsive and trauma-informed care practices for interns and therapists.
- Problem-solve in high-pressure situations and make sound clinical decisions during crises while mentoring interns on appropriate response strategies.
- Work a full-time schedule with flexible hours, including evenings and early mornings as needed, to meet client needs and support intern schedules, programming needs, and supervision requirements.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to assigned interns to support skill development, professional growth, and adherence to agency standards.
- Monitor intern caseloads and documentation to ensure services are delivered in alignment with clinical best practices and agency requirements.
- Provide timely feedback to interns and staff regarding clinical documentation, service delivery, and professional conduct.
- Support interns in developing effective client engagement strategies, treatment planning, and therapeutic interventions.
- Model professional and ethical clinical practice consistent with licensing board standards and the agency's policies and procedures.
- Identify areas of growth for interns and provide coaching, resources, and support to strengthen clinical competencies.
- Communicate regularly with the Clinical Manager regarding intern progress, supervision needs, and any concerns related to clinical performance.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment that encourages open discussion, professional development, and continuous improvement.
Licensure, Certification, and Education:
- Licensed as a State of Nevada Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or a Clinical Professional Counselor (CPC).
- Hold professional liability insurance at $1,000,000/$3,000,000 minimums.
- Master's degree in counseling field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of trauma-informed care and systemic family therapy approaches.
- Advanced understanding of crisis intervention and suicide risk assessment.
- Ability to mentor and guide developing clinicians.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to balance clinical responsibilities with leadership expectations.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback in a supportive, strengths-based manner.
- 1 year of experience in supervision or coaching/mentoring experience preferred
Physical & Special Requirements
- Ability to perform essential physical job duties (lifting, sitting, walking stairs, etc.).
- Reliable transportation, valid Nevada driver's license, proof of insurance and clean driving record.
- Maintain professional liability insurance at required minimum levels.
- Successfully pass background check.
